Curious about the life of a veterinarian? We sat down with Dr. Marin in Houston to find out more about her life and what led her to Emancipet. And, WOW, what a life she’s led! Read more below.
I was born in Montreal, Canada, in a French speaking household. After graduating from vet school in 1997, I moved to the USA and started working with Zoo animals at Lion Country Safari, Florida.
I travelled quite a bit for specialized training opportunities within the US, Canada and the UK. I got a Master’s degree through the London Zoo, UK, and Zoo Residency Specialty through University of Florida and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. In 2005, I moved to Houston to work at the Zoo, and fell in love with the city.
Throughout my career, I’ve had a pretty wild ride as a vet.
Some unforgettable experiences include bringing a bear to Romania, picking up a sea lion in Hawaii, working with lemurs in Madagascar, and darting animals from a helicopter (for medical care) in South Africa.
In 2015, after being married and having two kids, I needed a better work-life balance, and started a new chapter in my career by training veterinary technicians at Pima Medical Institute.
I started to work at Emancipet a few weekends a month, back in 2020, and really liked the mission and the staff. It made me realize that I missed clinical work and surgery. So, in the summer 2021, I took a break and spent time with my mom in Canada. Upon my return, I decided to become self-employed, which let me increase my work at Emancipet.
I’m excited to see the future projects that Emancipet is working on, and am hoping to be part of this wonderful team for years to come.
In my free time, I love the outdoors, camping, hiking, kayaking, and bird watching. I love traveling, and having new experiences. I bought a new house that needs a lot of repairs. I redid the bathroom already, and now my next project is the kitchen. It will be an adventure I’m sure!
