#Spayathon4PR

What Is Spayathon?

Spayathon for Puerto Rico is a Humane Society of the United States initiative that pulls together more than 25 organizations to serve tens of thousands of pets and stray animals by providing free veterinary care.

This work is accomplished over multiple 6-8 days trips that these organizations make several times a year. We are proud that our Emancipet Crisis Recovery Unit (CRU) is a part of this incredible movement.

Why Puerto Rico?

According to the Humane Society of the United States:

Puerto Rico is facing a growing animal welfare crisis… The few veterinary resources on the island are already stretched beyond capacity. The extreme levels of poverty across the island make what veterinary resources there are inaccessible to many pet caretakers.

The coalition of organization that make up Spayathon for Puerto Rico have responded to this crisis to spay, neuter and vaccinate at least 85,000+ dogs and cats across the island.

Emancipet’s CRU Impact

Emancipet Crisis Recovery Unit

Our Crisis Recovery Unit works tirelessly for the residents and pets of Puerto Rico. On average, our volunteer vet staff completes about 1,200+ spay/neuter surgeries each trip.

We Perform 1,200 Free Spay/Neuter Surgeries Per Trip

Leaving A Better Infrastructure

This initiative also has a second important goal, which is to build more capacity for free and low cost spay/neuter in Puerto Rico after the conclusion of the project. The HSUS, through a partnership with the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance, is offering high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter training for Puerto Rico veterinarians to increase the number of veterinarians on the island who can safely provide these services. In addition, at the conclusion of the 18-month project, all the surgical partners, including Emancipet, will donate their surgical equipment and supplies to local veterinarians, to help further the animal welfare efforts in Puerto Rico.

Maddie’s Fund® and other non-profit organizations, including PetSmart Charities, Petco Foundation, GreaterGood.org and The 20/22 Act Society, are providing the financial support necessary to carry out this initiative. Other groups like Banfield Foundation, Best Friends Animal Society and Rescue Bank are providing critical supplies, such as vaccines, pet food and crates.

We Can’t Do It Without You

We rely on generous donations from supports to ensure our Crisis Recovery Unit has the ability and tools necessary to activate when disaster strikes. If you want to support our team through their current trip and future Spayathon trips, please donate today.
