Our greatest wish is for our companions to live long, happy, and healthy lives. One of the most significant threats to our dog’s well-being is heartworm disease, a serious and potentially fatal condition.
Heartworm disease, transmitted through mosquito bites, can cause severe lung disease, heart failure, and organ damage if left untreated.
Across the nation, the risk of heartworm infection is a real concern, especially in Texas (the #3 state for heartworm incidences).
While we might associate mosquitoes with warmer areas of the country, mosquitos carrying heartworm larvae are present in many areas, and unfortunately has been expanding in recent years.
April: Heartworm Awareness Month

Heartworm Awareness Month serves as an important reminder about the dangers of heartworm disease and the importance of year-round prevention. The good news is that heartworm is almost entirely preventable with safe, effective medications.
A Commitment to Fighting Heartworm: Expanding Treatment Access in Houston
Emancipet is doubling its capacity for heartworm treatment for dogs in the Houston, Texas area. Our Monroe Clinic now offers heartworm treatment, in addition to the services already provided at our Wayside Clinic.

This significant expansion means that we will are now helping twice as many dogs each year in Houston receive the life-saving treatment they need. Emancipet is proud to offer this critical treatment starting at an affordable price of $225 (based on the weight of your dog), removing a major barrier for pet families facing this challenging diagnosis.
“Our goal is to remove barriers to veterinary care, and this expansion means that more Houston families have access to life-saving heartworm treatment for their dogs,” said Cheryl Katon, CEO of Emancipet. “By continuing to expand our services at affordable prices, we are helping to ensure that pets receive the treatment they need while reducing the spread of this devastating disease.”
Emancipet also currently offers treatment for dogs affected with heartworm disease at our Austin Dental and Surgical Center in Austin, Texas.
Such a friendly, helpful staff put me at ease about Scooby’s heartworm treatment. They were so sweet to him & you could tell he felt very comfortable with them when they took him back. He has had zero issues since his 1st shot & appears to be getting back to being our Scoobs! Just 3 interactions with your clinic, and I am convinced it’s the right clinic for our future vet needs too!

I was already overwhelmed with my baby girl having heartworm , the treatment being scary and all. The staff was so reassuring, especially answering questions that I had and breaking it down to me, as I am a new dog mom. Especially how much everything cost, am absolutely obsessed with everyone and everything.

Exciting Changes to Our Heartworm Prevention Products:
We’re pleased to announce some upgrades to our preventative medications, offering enhanced protection and broader coverage for your dogs and cats:
Medications For Dogs:
- Moving to Credelio Quattro (formerly Simparica Trio): We’re switching to Credelio Quattro because it offers several key advantages. While still providing excellent protection against fleas, ticks, and heartworms (and other internal parasites previously covered by Simparica Trio), Credelio Quattro also kills fleas and ticks faster. Additionally, it now includes treatment for tapeworms, which is significant as these parasites can, in some cases, be transmitted from dogs to humans.
- Moving to Interceptor (formerly Triheart): We’re now offering Interceptor, which provides the same reliable heartworm prevention as Triheart but with an added benefit: it treats whipworms, a common intestinal parasite not covered by Triheart. Importantly, Interceptor is also labeled for puppies as young as 4 weeks old, expanding our ability to protect even our youngest patients.
Medications For Cats:
- Moving to Advantage Multi Feline (formerly Revolution Plus): For our feline companions, we’re switching to Advantage Multi Feline. This new product boasts an active ingredient that is more effective at clearing roundworm and hookworm infections by targeting more stages of these intestinal parasites. Furthermore, Advantage Multi Feline remains at levels in the system that treat heartworm larvae for a longer duration compared to Revolution Plus, offering enhanced peace of mind.
Our veterinary team will ensure a smooth transition and will be happy to discuss these changes with you during your pet’s appointments. Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions you may have about these updated medications and how they benefit your pet.
